The Educational and Experimental Farm of the National Higher School of Veterinary Medicine (ENSV)
A bridge between theory and practice in the service of veterinary excellence
The Educational and Experimental Farm is a central structure of the National Higher School of Veterinary Medicine (ENSV). It provides students with a real immersion setting that enables them to transform theoretical knowledge into technical and professional skills, while also serving as a strategic hub for research within the School.
Located at the heart of ENSV, the Farm is much more than a simple livestock facility. It is an immersive learning structure designed to turn theoretical knowledge into technical expertise. It represents the essential link between classroom-based teaching and the realities of veterinary field practice.
Our Core Missions
The Farm is built on four strategic pillars and plays a key role in the life of the School:
Field-based education:
Supporting initial training through practical sessions (TP) and daily clinical activities, and providing a real-life environment for the acquisition of skills in animal production, health, nutrition, and animal welfare.
Health and Animal Welfare:
Ensuring diversified livestock production in compliance with biosafety standards and established sanitary protocols.
Biological Resources:
Ensuring the availability of live resources and biological matrices (blood, milk, organs) for tutorials, practical work, autopsies, and teaching activities.
Research Support:
Providing logistical and scientific support for national research projects and academic theses (Final-Year Projects, Master’s, and PhD programs).
Organization and Units
The Farm is organized into specialized units, enabling a multidisciplinary approach to animal health:
Poultry Unit (Birds & Game)
Equipped with an aviary and a battery-rearing facility, this unit hosts a wide range of species (quails, ducks, geese, pheasants, guinea fowl, ornamental poultry). It is the ideal setting for mastering poultry production under controlled conditions.
Rabbit Unit
The school rabbitry supports practical training focused on reproduction, nutrition, and rabbit health management.
Ruminant Unit (Cattle, Sheep, Goats)
Operating under a semi-extensive farming system, this unit allows students to practice herd management techniques, pasture management, and rigorous health monitoring of livestock.
Equine Unit (Horses)
The dedicated equine stable serves as a learning environment for handling, restraint, and species-specific veterinary care.
Activities of the Educational Farm
Animal Husbandry and Production
The Educational Farm ensures diversified and supervised animal production while respecting animal welfare, biosafety standards, and sanitary requirements. It provides:
-
animal-based products (meat, milk, eggs) for educational purposes;
-
biological matrices and animal carcasses for practical sessions, laboratories, and teaching in anatomy and pathology.
Educational Activities
As a cornerstone of practical education, the Farm hosts practical sessions and clinical activities for both School departments throughout the academic year.
It also contributes to field-based training for second- and third-year students by ensuring the acquisition of professional skills related to animal production and health management.
Research and Experimentation
The Educational Farm supports research activities by hosting final-year projects, Master’s and PhD research, as well as selected National Research Programs.
Future Perspectives
The Educational Farm aims to become a modern center for training, research, and knowledge valorization in service of the School. Its key objectives include:
-
strengthening practical training through the development of practical sessions, internships, and structured learning pathways;
-
modernizing herd management through the integration of digital tools, improved infrastructure, and enhanced animal welfare;
-
promoting research and experimentation in collaboration with laboratories, particularly in nutrition, reproduction, and animal health;
-
reinforcing biosafety and safety measures through optimized sanitary protocols and workflow organization;
-
developing partnerships with institutions and stakeholders in the agricultural sector, positioning the Farm as an educational and professional showcase;
-
integrating a sustainable approach based on environmentally friendly practices and optimized resource management.
